The 1HNMR fingerprints of the general characteristic extracts (GCEs) of rhizoma of Coptis chinensis Franch. from six different localities were determined on FT-NMR spectrometer. The characteristic signals were analyzed and assigned on the basis of the consituents of the GCEs. Six samples of C. Chinensis showed clearly the characteristic resonance peaks of the alkaloids of protoberberine type, which could be used for the identification of C.chinensis. The faked products were devoid of such characteristics.
