Four bioactive pure polysaccharides of Panax quiquefolium L.(PPQI 1~4) were isolated by Sephadex chromatography. The molecular weight of the polysaccharides were determined by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS). The sugar compositions were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC). The position of the linkages of the component sugars were determined by methylation and GC MS. The results showed that the four polysaccharides were all uronic acids containning heteropolysaccharide with the component sugar of arabinose, galactose and glucose in different molar ratios. Their molecular weights were in the range of 2×104~7×104 Dalton.
